We may assume that throughout history, erotica has always had an important place in human life. However, because of ever changing ethics regarding the depiction of nudity and erotic scenes, it did not always have the same importance in visual art.

Naturally, throughout the centuries there are many examples of images with an overt or underlying erotic meaning.
Certain periods in art history also produced a great range of beautiful nudes. In sculpture there are examples such as the Greek nudes, the Renaissance period with Michelangelo or more recently Rodin, Maillol and many others. But apart from these examples, art history does not show many images with an overt explicit sexual content.
Sculpture has some rare examples, such as several catchy erotic images from the Roman era, the beautiful temple reliefs of Khajuraho in India and the highly erotic sculptures of Rodin and the "Vienna Bronzes" in 19th century Europe. Therefore, it is obvious that it was difficult for collectors to find good erotic sculptures.
